How to Set Up an Instagram Business Account for API Access

2026-01-133 min readConvotic Team

Why You Need an Instagram Business Account

To use Instagram's Messaging API and integrate with tools like Convotic, you need an Instagram Business or Creator account connected to a Facebook Page. Personal accounts don't have access to these APIs.

Beyond API access, Business accounts offer valuable features:

  • Instagram Insights: Detailed analytics about your audience
  • Contact buttons: Let customers call, email, or get directions
  • Instagram Shopping: Sell products directly on Instagram
  • Promoted posts: Run ads to reach more people

Step 1: Create a Facebook Page

If you don't already have one, create a Facebook Page for your business:

  1. Go to facebook.com/pages/create
  2. Choose "Business or Brand"
  3. Enter your business name and category
  4. Add profile and cover photos
  5. Complete your Page information

Step 2: Convert to Instagram Business Account

  1. Open the Instagram app
  2. Go to your profile and tap the menu (three lines)
  3. Select Settings and privacy
  4. Tap Account type and tools
  5. Select Switch to professional account
  6. Choose Business (or Creator if applicable)
  7. Select a category for your business
  8. Review your contact information

Step 3: Connect to Your Facebook Page

This is the critical step for API access:

  1. In Instagram settings, go to Account type and tools
  2. Tap Linked accounts or Connected experiences
  3. Select Facebook
  4. Choose the Facebook Page to connect
  5. Confirm the connection

Step 4: Verify Messaging API Access

Once connected, verify that your account has Messaging API access:

  1. Go to your Facebook Page settings
  2. Navigate to New Pages Experience > Linked Accounts
  3. Confirm Instagram is listed and connected

Common Issues and Solutions

"Page not eligible" Error

This usually means your Facebook Page doesn't meet Meta's requirements. Ensure:

  • The Page is published (not unpublished/hidden)
  • You have admin access to the Page
  • The Page has been active for at least a few days

Instagram Not Showing in Linked Accounts

Try these steps:

  1. Log out of both Instagram and Facebook apps
  2. Clear app cache
  3. Log back in and retry the connection

API Access Denied

If you're connecting to third-party tools and get access denied:

  • Ensure your account has been a Business account for at least 24 hours
  • Verify the Facebook Page connection is active
  • Check that you've granted all required permissions
